From Signs to Diagnosis: An Interactive Hands-on Workshop

Are you confident in performing a systematic cardiovascular examination? Can you recognize important bedside signs, identify heart murmurs, and correlate clinical findings with the underlying diagnosis?

The Dhaka Medical College Internal Medicine Interest Group (DMC IMIG), in collaboration with the American College of Physicians (ACP) Bangladesh Chapter, is delighted to announce Cardiovascular Examination 1.0: From Signs to Diagnosis - an interactive, hands-on clinical skills workshop designed to strengthen the bedside examination skills and clinical reasoning abilities of undergraduate medical students.

Moving beyond theoretical knowledge, this workshop will emphasize a structured, practical approach to cardiovascular examination, helping participants recognize clinical signs and understand their diagnostic significance.

"Cardiovascular examination remains a fundamental skill in clinical medicine. Developing a systematic approach helps medical students identify physical signs, formulate differentials, and connect clinical findings with pathophysiology."

Workshop Curriculum & Core Clinical Modules

Participants will undergo focused, small-group practical training under direct bedside clinician supervision:

  1. 1.

    Systematic Cardiovascular Examination

    • General examination and identification of key peripheral signs
    • Arterial pulse examination (rate, rhythm, character, volume, vessel wall, radio-radial & radio-femoral delay)
    • Blood pressure assessment & pulse pressure interpretation
    • Jugular venous pressure (JVP) assessment (waveforms and bedside elevation distinction)
    • Peripheral oedema, clubbing, and peripheral stigmata of infective endocarditis
  2. 2.

    Precordial Examination - Hands-on

    • Systematic inspection and palpation of the precordium
    • Precise identification and localization of the apex beat (tapping, heaving, thrusting)
    • Assessment of parasternal heaves and palpable thrills
    • Systematic cardiac auscultation using bell and diaphragm across all four classic cardiac areas
  3. 3.

    Heart Sounds and Murmurs

    • First and second heart sounds (S1 and S2 physiological vs pathological splitting)
    • Recognition of added heart sounds (S3 gallop, S4, opening snap, pericardial knock)
    • Identification of common systolic and diastolic murmurs (MR, AS, MS, AR, VSD)
    • Dynamic auscultation, respiratory variation, postural maneuvers, and radiation patterns
  4. 4.

Clinical Correlation: From Signs to Diagnosis

    • Translating isolated bedside findings into coherent anatomical and functional diagnoses
    • Clinical examination approach in common valvular heart diseases
    • Structured bedside evaluation of acute and chronic heart failure
    • Case-based clinical discussion and bedside vignette problem solving
