What This Session Will Cover
1. Written Examination Strategy & High-Scoring Techniques
Mastering structure, presentation, and time management across Paper I and Paper II:
- Structured Answer Formats: How to organize pharmacology answers (Definition, Classification, Mechanism of Action, Pharmacokinetics, Clinical Uses, and Adverse Effects).
- Classification Mastery: Proven memory aids, mnemonics, and grouping techniques for memorizing voluminous drug classes without getting confused.
- Mechanism of Action (MOA) Schematics: Drawing high-yield receptor pathways, intracellular cascades, and enzyme inhibition diagrams to secure full marks in descriptive questions.
2. Autonomic Nervous System & Cardiovascular Pharmacology
Deconstructing core systems that appear in almost every written paper and viva board:
- Autonomic Pharmacology: Cholinergic agonists/antagonists, organophosphate poisoning management, adrenergic receptors, sympathomimetics, and beta-blockers in clinical practice.
- Cardiovascular Therapeutics: Antihypertensive algorithms, antianginal drug selection, heart failure management (ACEi/ARBs, ARNIs, beta-blockers, SGLT2i, diuretics), and antiarrhythmic classifications.
- Diuretics & Renin-Angiotensin Axis: Site of action, electrolyte handling, and emergency management of hypertensive crises.
3. Antimicrobial Chemotherapy & Resistance Mechanisms
Conquering the most critical and heavily tested module in modern pharmacology:
- Cell Wall & Protein Synthesis Inhibitors: Beta-lactams (penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems), macrolides, aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones.
- Antimicrobial Stewardship: Bactericidal vs. bacteriostatic combinations, post-antibiotic effect, and strategies to prevent drug resistance.
- Antitubercular & Antimalarial Regimens: First-line DOTS regimens, common adverse reactions (hepatotoxicity, optic neuritis, hyperuricemia), and treatment protocols for vivax vs. falciparum malaria.
4. CNS Pharmacology, Endocrinology & Autacoids
Navigating neuropharmacology and systemic drugs with ease:
- Central Nervous System: Antiepileptics (mechanisms, teratogenicity, status epilepticus management), sedative-hypnotics, antidepressants, and general vs. local anesthetics.
- Endocrine Pharmacology: Insulin formulations, oral hypoglycemic agents, thyroid/antithyroid drugs, and corticosteroid regimens with tapering schedules.
- NSAIDs & Autacoids: COX-1 vs. COX-2 selectivity, analgesic ladder, peptic ulcer risks, and antihistaminic classifications.
5. Practical, Prescription Writing & Viva Voce Demystified
Excelling in OSPE stations, practical journals, rational prescriptions, and viva boards:
- Rational Prescription Writing: Proper format, generic naming, dose calculation, frequency, duration, and patient instructions for common ailments (pneumonia, UTI, acute gastroenteritis, hypertension).
- OSPE Station Navigation: Identifying drug specimens, analyzing dose charts, spotting drug interactions, and interpreting adverse reaction scenarios in 2 minutes.
- Viva Voce Traps & Tips: Navigating examiner favorites, therapeutic index calculations, loading vs. maintenance dose concepts, and how to maintain composure when answering challenging clinical scenarios.
